Notes:  Colonel Joseph Mansfield, as Inspector General of the Army, and Lt. Col. Joseph E. Johnston (later the Confederate Civil War general), went from post to post throughout Texas and New Mexico (primarily along the Rio Grande) and reported not only on the officers and soldiers and their forts, but also the efficiency of post sutlers, morale, training, equipment, daily lives of the soldiers, terrain and topography (Johnston was a civil engineer by training), and recommendations for improvements.   Much of their reporting was influenced by their service in the Mexican-American War–one of the provisions of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo required the United States military to prevent Indian “depredations” into Mexico.
