Notes: Frontier Forts and People Series No. 4.  Fort Fillmore (named for the 13th President of the United States) was established in 1851, as an outpost to control the Apache (as if).  At that time it was the only Army post between central Texas and the California border, and one of the largest forts in the country.  More than forty general officers during the Civil War served at Fort Fillmore–Longstreet, Joe Johnston, Joe Wheeler, Pickett, John Pope, among them.  In 1861, after an unsuccessful battle between the fort’s soldiers and invading Confederates at the First Battle of Mesilla, the fort was set afire and abandoned.  The ruins are now covered by a pecan grove.  The ephemera included is a pamphlet,  Food Animals Utilized by the Garrison Stationed at For Fillmore, New Mexico 1851-1862 (Parmalee, El Palacio, Summer 1967, pp. 43-45).  See photo.  Ephemera very rare.  No other copies available)
