Notes:  A volume in the Rivers of America series, 27 published by 1945, including this volume.  The Salinas flows northwest (south to north, hence “upside-down”), from its headwaters near Paso Robles to empty into Monterey Bay between Castroville and Monterey.  Vignettes of  history with the river as connection, and the Salinas valley as the setting.  Soldiers, traders, the fur business, horse thieves, 19th century politics, drought, and the three Communist communities of the Valley.
