St. Helens in 1980 made that statement moot. The establishment of Great Basin National Park was, at the time of original publication in 1976, Houghton’s fervent wish. The Park was established in 1986.) The Great Basin we think of today lies between the Rockies and the Sierra Nevadas, north of the Colorado River and south of the Columbia river system, from Lake Tahoe to the Bear River in Wyoming. It encompasses portions of California, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho, an area of approximately 220,000 square miles. Houghton’s labor of love.
