Notes:  In the aftermath of the Custer Massacre and the cries for revenge throughout the country, the military turned to Colonel Nelson Miles (1839-1925), a Civil War veteran of Antietam, Chancellorsville (for which he won the Medal of Honor), Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Courthouse (among others), and known to be an effective commander, to finish the Indian Wars.  Over the period of a year (1876-1877), through several skirmishes and battles (Spring Creek, Cedar Creek, Bark Creek, Ash Creek, Wolf Mountains, and Muddy Creek) Miles and the 5th Infantry “convinced” the Sioux, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Comanche, and other tribes to abandon their efforts to wage war with the advancing Anglos.  Miles, later in his career, replaced George Crook in the quest to neutralize Geronimo (stabbing Lt. Charles Gatewood in the back in his dealings with Geronimo).  He ended his military career as the last Commanding General of the U.S. Army.  Detailed history, illustrated with period photos, maps, diagrams.
