King, an 1866 graduate of West Point, served in Ohio (where he also played professional baseball for the fledgling Cincinnati Red Stockings) and New Orleans before being assigned in 1874 to Camp Verde, Arizona. In a battle against the Apache at Sunset Pass, Arizona, King was wounded so badly it took a year for him to recuperate. He went on to serve with Crook in the 1876 Big Horn and Yellowstone Expeditions against the Sioux and Cheyenne (the subject of this volume). He retired from the Army in 1880, and became a well-known, best-selling author. He wrote almost 70 books, mostly about the military.
