Notes: Should be considered a companion volume to “How the North Won: A Military History of the Civil War” by Hattaway and Jones (University of Illinois Press, 1983). We’re all familiar with the idea that the North had superior manufacturing capabilities, and greater access to manpower, but the naval blockade of the South and the willingness of Northern generals (Grant and Sherman in particular) to sacrifice soldiers in battle, as well as the “incompetence” of Jefferson Davis (faulty strategy, poor leadership), and the penultimate battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg, all contributed to the eventual defeat of the South. Adherence to slavery and “states rights” were background issues.
