Notes: While today we hardly think of Arkansas as “the west”, during the Civil War it was essentially the frontier. Pea Ridge is in the upper northwestern corner of Arkansas, in mountainous terrain. The battle occurred between March 6-8, 1862, and, despite poor leadership, was a victory for the Union. The battle secured (at the time) the southwestern frontier for the Union, and gave the Union control of portions of Arkansas and Missouri. A necessary precursor to Vicksburg.
