The church of San Miguel is considered the oldest Catholic church in the U.S., oral history dating its beginnings to approximately 1598, though the actual church footprint dates c. 1610-1626. The church was partially destroyed twice, once by a provincial governor, once by either a strong windstorm or earthquake (accounts vary), and seriously damaged in the Pueblo Revolt. After the reconquista, De Vargas ordered the church to be repaired. Five pages of the pamphlet are in Spanish, with the English translation following, regarding the expenses and people involved in the reconstruction. From the library of the late archaeologist John Otis Brew, his signature on cover. For a modern history of the chapel see https://sanmiguelchapel.org/
