A Roman à clef of Jean-Baptiste Lamy (1814-1888), the first Archbishop of Santa Fe. Lamy was archbishop from 1851 to 1855, and was responsible for the construction of St. Francis Cathedral and the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe. Bishop’s Road in Santa Fe is named for the road that led to Lamy’s ranch/retirement home, north of Santa Fe. Cather’s story made Lamy a New Mexican icon.
