Notes: Cultural Resources Report Number 72. If this had a print run of a hundred copies I’d be astonished. The Elena Gallegos Land Exchange involved the City of Albuquerque, a private prep school, the BLM, and the Forest Service. The City of Albuquerque wanted to acquire the major portion of the Elena Gallegos Grant, then owned by Albuquerque Academy (the prep school) through various land exchanges involving all the parties involved. Two of the pieces of land were Forest Service parcels near Las Cruces, NM, and the subject of this report. “The land exchange required several lines of environmental assessment, involving such fields as geology, paleontology, watershed, wildlife, soils, grazing and of course archaeology.” A total of thirty-six historic sites are included in this report. “Archeological fieldwork included survey, testing and data recovery of some of the recorded sites. Cultural materials from eighteen prehistoric sites on the West Mesa of Las Cruces…were analyzed for this report; ten sites were available for analysis from the East Mesa.” (From the Abstract). Two companion volumes are also available–the Albuquerque sector (see https://joethebookguy.com/shop/archaeology/heritage-resources-management-archeology-of-the-albuquerque-sector-of-the-elena-gallegos-project/ ) and the Farmington sector (see https://joethebookguy.com/shop/archaeology/heritage-resources-management-archeology-of-the-farmington-sector-of-the-elena-gallegos-project/ ). VERY RARE. No other copies available for sale, and held in only 4 libraries.
