Notes: Uncertain dates (between 1859-1865) cloud this report of a “battle” (?) between the 1st California Volunteer Cavalry and Mescalero Apaches, in Dark Canyon, a section of the Lincoln National Forest in the Guadalupe Mountains near the southeastern New Mexico/Texas border.  While not another Sand Creek, it certainly wasn’t a large scale battle–the military surprised the Apaches in their camp, fired on them, the Apaches escaped, the military didn’t pursue.  This report would have benefited from a good editor.
