Notes: Anthropological Papers of the University of Arizona Number 31. Fort Bowie was founded on July 28, 1862, following the Battle of Apache Pass in 1861. The fort served as the main base for General George Crook in his campaigns against the Apache, and it was to the fort that Geronimo and his band of followers were brought prior to their removal to Florida. The fort also served as a way station on the Butterfield Trail. More than 17,000 artifacts were recovered from the old and “new” Fort Bowie sites during the stabilization and salvage operations.
