Notes: Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin 184. Sia, or as it is now called–Zia–was the only Keresan pueblo studied ethnologically during the 19th century, by James and Matilda Coxe Stevenson. When James died in 1888, Matilda prepared his work for publication (“The Sia”, Eleventh Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology, 1894). No other studies of the Sia/Zia were done until this one. This title was later reprinted as “Zia: The Sun Symbol Pueblo” by Calvin Horn Publisher and the University of Albuquerque, 1974.
