Notes: The Brand Book, Volume 43, No. 1.  Limited edition of 200 copies, of which this is number 127.  When James J. Corbett abdicated his boxing heavyweight championship title, the 1890’s boxing world was, to coin a phrase, in a tizzy.  The promoter Dan Stuart tried to create a match in or near El Paso, Texas, between the two top contenders, Peter Maher, “The Galway Giant”, and Bob Fitzsimmons, a Cornish-born New Zealander.  Laws were passed outlawing boxing in the state of Texas, the Texas Rangers and U.S. cavalry were put on alert to stop the fight, and the Mexican army moved to the border to prevent what it thought might be an invasion.  Judge Roy Bean, “The Law West of the Pecos” (state laws be damned), offered Langtry, Texas as the venue.  And the winner was….
