Notes: During the Civil War, almost 180,000 African-Americans served in the Union Army, and 33,380 of them died.  For almost a quarter-century after the Civil War, the Ninth and Tenth Regiments of the U.S. Cavalry served in campaigns on the Great Plains, in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, and finally in the Dakotas.  The only battle they couldn’t win was against prejudice and discrimination.
