It has always been a small town and for New Mexico not a particularly old one, but the violence of its early years ensured Lincoln a permanent place in the annals of the American West. It was the setting for a famous frontier conflict known as the Lincoln County War and for the exploits of a legendary western outlaw, Billy the Kid. This is a history of that community. The story begins with its first settlement in 1855, coincident with the establishment of nearby Fort Stanton, and continues until 1913 when it finally gave up the county seat of Lincoln County to the new town of Carrizozo. ” (From the Introduction)
