Condition: Fair.  Binding tight.  Upper front cover edge has an approx. 1/2″ x 2″ area where a previous owner’s name has been marked out (see photo).  Upper edge title page has two areas marked out (previous owner’s name, other {?}).  Previous owner’s name in ink above Table of Contents.    Spine head has an approx. 1/8″ split at upper front cover corner.  Includes 13 fold out maps.  Edge and corner wear.  It’s been used.

Notes: The first commercial oil well in New Mexico was drilled in the San Juan Basin in 1922, and in 1928 the first well in southeastern New Mexico, Midwest State No. 1, was drilled near Hobbs, NM.  New Mexico is now the second largest producer of oil in the United States, after Texas (and ahead of Alaska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, California, Wyoming and Colorado).  Winchester invented a process to determine how much oil was trapped in shale rock,  proving his method in the shale fields of northwest Colorado and northeastern Utah.  This volume deals with wells drilled less than 500 feet.  It was superseded in 1942 by an updated volume.  Includes 5 separate maps in pocket at rear.  This volume VERY RARE.  No other copies available for sale.
