Description
Author: Cushing, Frank Hamilton (1857-1900)
Publisher: Smithsonian Institution
Pub Date: 1883
Binding: Hardcover
Condition: Fair. No marks, tears, bends, folds. This report came from the Second Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology of 1883. The original BAE volume was falling apart and I excised this report and had it rebound in hardcover. Some bubbling to front and rear boards.
Notes: The original 1883 publication of what we now call “Zuni Fetishes.” “The difference between a fetish and a carving is purely a matter of belief. If a particular object is believed to possess power then it is a fetish. The collector is interested in form, material and age of a fetish, the Indian is interested in its efficacy. These attitudes are culturally determined and not easily reconciled.” (From the Introduction) There’s a pamphlet reprint of this title (see https://joethebookguy.com/shop/indian/zuni-fetishes/ ) and an extraordinarily comprehensive 2 volume set (see https://joethebookguy.com/shop/indian/releasing-the-spirit-the-art-of-zuni-fetish-carving-2-volume-set/ ) also available.
