Notes: Pamphlet.  Offprint from American Anthropologist, Vol. 46, No. 4.  While the Navajo did not participate in the Ghost Dance, they knew of it from their association with the Utes.  The essential elements of the Ghost Dance–the return of the dead, removal of the whites, and reestablishment of the old order–were certainly spread among the tribe, but believed in various manners.  Return of the dead, particularly among the Navajo, was an idea that just did not fit with Navajo culture.  “In short, the Navaho were frightened out of their wits for fear the tenets of the movement were true.” (p. 525)  RARE.
