Notes: A biography (jeremiad?) of the Big Blackfoot River (featured in Norman Maclean’s “A River Runs Through It”).  This is a journalist’s take on Abbey’s “The Monkey Wrench Gang.”  Manning makes no bones about it–a planned gold mine, along with forest clear-cutting, California would-be cowboys, and cattle–are the scourges of the Big Blackfoot River and he’ll be damned if he’s gonna take it.  The Smithsonian ran a wonderful review of this book back in March, 1999 (see https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/review-of-one-round-river-the-curse-of-gold-and-the-fight-for-the-big-blackfoot-164620462/  )  Manning is an angry John McPhee.  He’s that good.
