Notes: Cordry landed the ideal job in the 1930’s–traveling around Mexico looking for all kinds of items for the Museum of the American Indian and the Heye Foundation. He and his wife visited at least a dozen villages, photographed the locals in “costume” and in what we think of as everyday clothes. Cordry collected masks from the 1930s until his death. Masks as symbolic, shamanistic, religious and social tools. Describes materials and techniques of carving. Various regional and ethnic variations. There’s a potful of masks in here, in color, and some will give you nightmares.
