Publisher: J.J. Augustin

Pub Date: 1938 (First edition)

Condition: Fair to Good.  Binding tight (more about this in a second).  No tears, bends or folds.  Without dust jacket.  Previous owner’s name in ink and bookplate on inside front board.  Gilt on spine faded, barely readable.  Once small chip to front fore edge.  Foxing/staining to interior front and rear pastedowns at spine edge.  Okay, now for that binding thing I was talking about–the book is bound upside down.  The front illustration is reversed–i.e., it’s upside down on the rear board.  It happens occasionally at the bindery.  I don’t know if makes them more rare.

Notes: Scarce.  Earle’s great illustrations of kachinas.  Foreword by Ruth Benedict.  “The term Kachina in Hopi applies to a number of distinct things which are all associated in the Hopi mind.  It refers to the masked and painted impersonation, to the spiritual being impersonated, to the clouds, and to the dead.”  (From Chapter One)
