Notes: Julian, California is a mountain town (elevation 4226′) north and east of San Diego, and by the time you read this, probably a suburb. Gold was discovered in Julian in 1869, and the boom town era followed soon after. Ellsberg gives the histories of eleven mines in the area, estimating more than $7,000,000 taken from the mines. Julian is now known for its local agriculture (primarily apples), and tourism.
