Notes: Pamphlet.  The Empire Mine near Grass Valley, California, was California’s most famous gold mine, and among the richest producing mines in the world.  It was discovered in 1850.  The “final” depth of the inclined mine was 11,007 feet.  The mine closed in 1957.
