Condition: Fair.  Binding tight.  All edges and corners have bends, wear.  Spine head and foot worn.  The text is typed on onionskin paper, with numerous hand corrections.  Includes one black-and-white photo tipped in.  There is a page listing “List of Maps and Diagrams”, but no maps, no diagrams included in the text, and there is no listing in the Table of Contents for any maps or diagrams.  This is an original, NOT A COPY.

Notes: This is probably Hack’s original draft of the geology, stratigraphy, and geology of the Jeddito Valley and Antelope Mesa, and probably an early draft of a portion of his dissertation, written about his work with the Awatovi Expedition in 1937, 1938, and 1939.  His dissertation adviser at Harvard was Kirk Bryan, at the time the most famous geologist in the United States.   Think about this possible series of events:  John Otis Brew, leader of the forthcoming Awatovi Expedition goes to Bryan, says “I need a geologist.”  Bryan recommends Hack, a grad student.  Hack becomes part of one of the most famous, the first of the “BIG” archaeological expeditions –Brew, Hattie and Bert Cosgrove, Watson Smith, Richard Woodbury, Al Lancaster, Erik Reed, Anna Shepard, Alfred Kidder (among others)….and Hack.   Helluva way to start a career.   For a memorial for John Hack see https://www.geosociety.org/documents/gsa/memorials/v23/Hack-JT.pdf
