Notes: SWCA Anthropological Research Paper Number Six. Prior to a land exchange, SWCA studied 7 small sites in the Hieroglyphic Mountains, north and west of Phoenix. 5 prehistoric and protohistoric sites, and 2 historic mine sites were investigated. Two rockshelters had plenty of material culture deposits. “Prehistoric Hohokam components dated to the Colonial, Sedentary, and Classic periods (A.D. 700-1450). Yavapai components, present at two sites, may span the period from A.D. 1300 to 1700 or even later…Both Hohokam and Yavapai use of the area appeared to have related to seasonal gathering of wild-plant food, primarily saguaro and other cacti, leguminous-tree seed pods, and possibly greens and grass seeds, and exploitation of animal resources, particularly deer, rabbit, and tortoise.” (From the Abstract)
