Description
Author: Swanton, John R. (1873-1958)
Publisher: United States Government Printing Office
Pub Date: 1979 (5th printing)
Binding: Hardcover
Condition: Fair. Ex-library. Binding tight. No tears. Library markings throughout, on spine, on Table of Contents page, in pencil and stamped. Includes four maps in pocket at rear. The inclusion of those maps has caused the corners of the last 25 pages of the Index to bend (sag?). Without dust jacket, as issued. Previous owner listed the four maps on the last endpaper. Some cocking to text–part of that is caused by the map and map pocket, part of by the size of the text block itself. Smudging to bottom text block. Light edge and corner wear.
Notes: Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin 145. Originally published in 1952. Stunning reference work. Arranged by state, including Canada, Mexico and Central America, and the West Indies. “As far as possible each tribe, or group has been treated by itself, but in Washington, Oregon, California and Alaska, to avoid needless repetition, the history of the tribes is considered as a whole.” (From the Introduction). Really the only books comparable to this are the Smithsonian Handbook of the American Indian, and the BAE volumes on South American Indians.
