Notes: Haniel Long was a professor in Pittsburgh who moved, with his family, to Santa Fe in 1929. He was primarily known as a poet, but also a novelist, and with this book, a historian and naturalist–the Four Corners, European exploration, Indian pueblos, Kit Carson, pioneer presses, Billy the Kid, marijuana and peyote, and other topics (see Table of Contents in photos above). He was friends with people like Laura Gilpin, Spud Johnson, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Gustave Baumann, Will Schuster, and Witter Bynner. His most well-known work, published in 1936, is “Interlinear to Cabeza de Vaca”, a novella, considered a “spiritual classic”, about Cabeza de Vaca’s eight year trek from Florida to Mexico. Incredibly interesting, easy read.
