Notes:  No coal mining town ever suffered more than the company town of Dawson, New Mexico.  An explosion in October 1913,  in a mine operated by Phelps Dodge & Company, killed 261 miners and 2 rescuers (giving it the dubious distinction of being the second largest mining disaster in American history).  Ten years later another explosion killed 120 miners.  Two survived.  The miners who died in the two explosions were mostly immigrants, from Austria, Finland, France, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Sweden, and other countries.  Phelps Dodge dismantled the community in 1950, and it is now a ghost town.  The author, Nick Pappas, brings a newspaperman’s eye to the disasters.   There is a reunion of sorts, every two years, of the descendants of Dawson.  Lists of those killed are Appendices.
