Notes: Conference papers. The Rio Grande is the fifth longest river in the United States, and forms one of the longest political boundaries on the North American continent. This symposium was designed to look at the hydrological and cultural history of the river–“cultural” referring to the Hispanic presence (note the publisher) on the river since the 16th century . “The Río Grande, as we know it, enters the historical records with the arrival of the Spanish to New Mexico in 1540.” (Page 3). Includes a section on water rights, compacts, and legal issues concerning the river. Native Americans and their rights to the water are a very minor topic here.
