Description
Author: Hoots, H.W. (Harold William) (1899-1979)
Publisher: Government Printing Office (Washington, D.C.)
Pub Date: 1925
Binding: Paperback
Condition: Poor. Ex-library. There’s been quite a bit of use over the years, and it shows. The binding is taped now–the rear cover with map pocket was detached. The map pocket is now reattached as well. Library (?) “Discard” stamp on upper front cover corner. Previous owner’s pencil markings along upper front cover edge. There’s an approx. 1″ black smudge on pages 38-39. Includes one fold-out, and 9 maps/charts in pocket at rear. Rear cover has a side-to-side fold. All corners and edges worn. Gimme a break–it’s a hundred years old.
Notes: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 780-B. The signature of a previous owner on the front cover is the name of the man who wrote the Preface–J.A. Udden of the University of Texas. This was published the year (1925) Hoots received his doctorate, so I’m inclined to believe this is a revised dissertation (no proof). In this era, the Permian Basin is known world-wide for its oil production. What was important a hundred years ago? Salt and Potash. Hoots was known for his ability to find oil fields, most impressively in California (and maybe the Permian Basin?). For an obituary of Hoots see https://rock.geosociety.org/net/documents/gsa/memorials/v18/Hoots-HW.pdf . I totally recommend it.
