Notes: Henri Vaillancourt (b. 1950) makes birch bark canoes in the same style and manner as the Indians of the northeastern United States and Canada. No nails. No screws. No rivets. Only wood and bark. McPhee, Vaillancourt and three others make a 150 mile canoe trip through the waters of the Maine woods. Not always the most pleasant trip. I believe this trip and book prepared McPhee for his wonderful “Encounters with the Archdruid.” McPhee can rightfully be called the literary godfather of Gary Paul Nabhan, Craig Childs, Richard Manning, and Rowan Jacobsen.
