Notes:  Pamphlet.  The Brand Book, Vol. 15, No. 1  Publication No. 182.  “Elmo Scott Watson and Don Russell Debate a Famous Victory and Discuss the Controversies that were its Aftermath”  Originally published in 1948 as Volume V, No. 9 of the Chicago Westerners Brand Book.  A debate about whether the Battle of the Washita (Nov. 27, 1868) was indeed a battle or a massacre.  The debate–based on Custer’s own inflated casualty report, the approximate number of non-combatant deaths (including women and children), and reports from eyewitnesses–concludes “massacre.”  RARE.
