Condition: Fair.  Binding tight.  No tears, bends or folds.   One illustration page (page 389) has a water mark on the lower corner.  Does not affect text or illustration.   This is an extracted paper (twenty pages) from the Third Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology for 1881-1882.   The original BAE volume was falling apart and I had this paper rebound separately, with a new paper cover and title sheet.

Notes: Matthews was a military surgeon who served in the Civil War, was assigned to the Dakota Territory (where he began his self-taught ethnographic studies with the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara), and was eventually assigned to Fort Wingate (at the request of John Wesley Powell).  It was at Fort Wingate that Matthews achieved his notoriety, as arguably the most faithful correspondent of the Navajo, their lives, and their ceremonies (along with Father Berard Haile).
