Matthews was a military surgeon who served in the Civil War, was assigned to the Dakota Territory (where he began his self-taught ethnographic studies with the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara), and was eventually assigned to Fort Wingate (at the request of John Wesley Powell). It was at Fort Wingate that Matthews achieved his notoriety, as the most faithful correspondent of the Navajo, their lives, and their ceremonies. The second report of this volume, “Navajo Silversmiths”, was published in the Second Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology for 1880-1881, while “Navajo Weavers” was published in the Third Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology for 1881-1882.
