Condition: Fair.  Binding tight, but wearing.  Upper front cover corner has an approx. 6″ bend, taped at upper edge on inside front cover, and along front cover recto edge near upper corner.  Previous owner’s name in ink on upper front cover corner, and on ffep.  Upper front cover corner missing an approx. 1″ x 1/4″ piece, with a 1/8″ triangular chip along upper edge.   Front cover recto edge chipped in several spots.  Upper front cover corner at spine head has an approx. 1½” tear along front spine edge.  Lower front cover corner has an approx. 1½” tear along spine edge.  Spine head and foot worn, chipped.  Upper rear cover corner missing an approx. 3/4″ triangular chip, with lower rear cover corner missing an approx. 1/8″ x 1″ chip.  I’d say this baby’s been rode hard and put up wet.

Notes: Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Vol. XV–No. 1.  The Cosgroves were amateur archaeologists who began excavating Mimbres sites on their private ranch near Silver City, NM.  Early in the 1920s, the Cosgroves met A.V. Kidder, then head of the Peabody Museum.  Kidder was so impressed with their archaeological work and rigor that he hired them to work for the Peabody to work on the Swarts Ranch Ruin, their first professional archaeological work.  The Cosgroves catalogued more than 10,000 artifacts over their three years working on the Swarts Ranch Ruin.   From the library of the late archaeologist John Otis Brew, his signature on cover and ffep.
