Notes: Soil Systems Publications in Archaeology No. 20 (all volumes).  I am reluctant to call this a set because it is ONLY the first 6 volumes of a projected 8 volume set (see below).  Excavation prior to freeway expansion.  “Pueblo Grande was one of the primary villages in the Phoenix Basin…The site was occupied as early as A.D. 500 during the Pioneer period.  The remains found in the project area date primarily to the Classic period.  Early occupation of the project area is limited to the late Sedentary period, probably dating between A.D. 1000 and 1100 or 1150.  The Classic period occupation oin the project area probably dates between A.D. 1150 and 1450.”  (From the Abstract)  More than 500,000 sherds and 50,000 pieces of chipped stone recovered (and they were only able to work over 25% of the project area.)  “The eight Pueblo Grande Report volumes, which contain over 2,000 pages of published data, as well as the six volumes on the history of research, platform mound and immediately surrounding features in preparation by the City of Phoenix make Pueblo Grande the most intensively investigated and best-reported prehistoric site in the United States.” (From the Foreword)

According to the Series Editor, Cory Breternitz, only 7 of the 8 original volumes were published in 1994.  Time constraints, publication funding, and personnel involvements in the project forced the cancellation of the original Volume 8: Household and Synthetic Studies.  The synthesis volume (Volume 8) was eventually published in 2003 by the University of Arizona Press as Centuries of Decline during the Hohokam Classic Period at Pueblo Grande, edited by David R. Abbott.
