Notes: Calvin specializes in the interactions between brains, climate and evolution (17 books worth).  He postulates that 2½-3 million years ago three events were crucial in our development to modern homo sapiens.  We became prolific toolmakers, brain size increased four-fold, and the Ice Ages forced us to adapt.  And he thinks lightning played a big part in the whole shebang (no tin foil hat here).
