Notes: 350 historic markers throughout the state.  The state is divided into 12 regions (in a grid pattern, northwest to southeast), with the markers arranged alphabetically in each region.  Text on the markers is limited to about a hundred words (e.g. “Blackwater Draw Locality No. 1: This National Historic Landmark commemorates the type site of the Clovis PaleoIndian Archaeological Culture, which is traditionally accepted as the earliest occupation of the New World.  More than 11,000 years ago, these peoples hunted mammoth and bison near here along the margins of spring fed ponds.  Some of the oldest wells in the New World were dug here over 5000 years ago.”  (pg. 216).  Historical, geological, Native American, scenic.  I can hear Beth Hadas saying now “This is the kind of book a University Press was meant to publish.”  Another car book.
