Notes: Excavations conducted at 15 sites in “Dead Valley”, approximately 15 miles northeast of Springerville, Arizona, prior to Tuscon Gas & Electric (now known as Tucson Electric Power) using the valley to dump fly ash. Fly ash is a byproduct of coal burning power plants (Springerville, e.g.), and has some beneficial uses (concrete, road and residential building materials). “The sites range from small sherd and lithic scatters lacking architecture to pueblos of two to three rooms. Most of the sites are either ephemeral ramada structures or windbreak structures with low masonry walls and represent seasonally utilized agricultural field houses. The majority of the sites date to within a relatively brief time period, the Pueblo II Period, between A.D. 900 and 1150.” (From the Abstract)
