Notes: Anthropological Papers Number 13. This volume is the final report on the Tule Springs Project. It was preceded by the Anthropological Paper Number 10 “The Corn Creek Dunes Site: A Dated Surface Site in Southern Nevada” (NSM, 1963, OP), and Anthropological Paper Number 12 “Tule Springs Archaeological Surface Survey” (NSM, 1964, OP). “Previous excavations there (at the Tule Springs site) had suggested that man was present at this location more than 28,000 years ago. Some archaeologist considered the evidence inconclusive, but, in 1962, largely on the basis of finds reported for Tule Springs, a number of prominent specialists in the Early Man field were postulating that men with a pre-projectile point culture had entered the New World some 30,000 or more years ago.” (From the Introduction) Brief excavations at the site in 1933, 1954, and 1955, found charcoal and bone evidence of extinct camel, horse and bison, as well as an obsidian flake “not retouched, but undoubtedly made by man.” (ibid.)
