Notes:  Volume 124 of the Civilization of the American Indian series.  The Mixtec occupied an area covering portions of the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Puebla, in southern Mexico.   “The only extant historical manuscripts painted prior to the arrival of the European conquerors are a group of eight animal-hide screenfolds from the Mixtec-speaking region of southern Mexico.  On these screenfolds, often called “codices,” anonymous scribes recorded in a pictographic fashion the genealogies and achievements of numerous Mixtec rulers.”  (From the Preface).  NO color illustrations, all black-and-white.  Mixtec dynastic history and place names through iconography.
