Description

Author: Steward, Julian Haynes  (1902-1972)

Publisher: University of Michigan Library

Pub Date: 2021 (reprint edition)

Binding: Paperback

Condition: Fair to Good.  Binding tight.  No marks, tears, bends or folds.  Very light edge and corner wear.  Some (pencil?) markings from the original 1937 edition are copied on various pages, but that’s a function of the reprint process, not the previous owner.

Notes: Pamphlet.  Facsimile reprint of Smithsonian Publication 3437, originally published as an offprint in 1937 in the Smithsonian Report for 1936, pages 405-425.   NOT a survey of petroglyphs throughout the the United States, more commentary on types of petroglyphs, some possible explanations, and debunking myths about petroglyphs–“Some persons, who cling to hypotheses that were abandoned when archeology became a science, are determined to prove that Egyptians, Babylonians, Hebrews, Greeks, Romans, Chinese and other Old World peoples reached America long ago.  They interpret petroglyphs as records of trans-Pacific migrations and of strange deed of antiquity.” (p. 407).  While the text in this reproduction is fine, the photos are washed out (a function of age and the lack of access to the originals).
