Notes: Papers of the Peabody Museum No. 38. With the possible exception of “One Man’s Archaeology”, this may be Watson Smith’s magnum opus. As J.O. Brew says in the Foreword to this volume, “Watson Smith was eminently qualified to make this study. No only had he laid the groundwork for it in Marsh Pass, but he was a member of the staff of the Awatovi Expedition throughout the four years of major excavations at Awatovi, and had become intimately acquainted with another manifestation of the school of Hopi painting through his excavation and analysis of some 185 mural decorations (Smith, 1952).” I wrote a blog post several years ago about Watson Smith, and nothing has changed my mind about him over the years. ALL archaeological writing should be as good as Smith’s.
