Notes: Anthropological Papers of the University of Arizona Number 45.   The Whitewater Draw in southeastern Arizona was first explored by archaeologists in 1926, “…when Byron Cummings discovered mammoth remains overlying and associated with ground stone artifacts.” (From the Preface).  In the late 1930s, Edwin Sayles and Ernst Antevs examined the arroyo and published the monograph “The Cochise Culture” (Gila Pueblo, 1941).  Sayles and Antevs did additional work there starting in 1953, but both died before completing a manuscript.  Their preliminary results were published (using only Sayles name) in 1983 by the University of Arizona Press as “The Cochise Cultural Sequence in Southeastern Arizona” (Anthropological Papers of the University of Arizona Number 42, see https://joethebookguy.com/shop/archaeology/the-cochise-cultural-sequence-in-southeastern-arizona/).  This volume was written “…to clarify unresolved geological and archaeological questions in Whitewater Draw.” (Waters, p. xi)
