Condition: Fair.  Ex-library.  Stapled binding tight.  Library markings on front cover spine edge.  Loer front cover corner has a small triangular chip, with an approx. 1″ bend, extends through entire volume.  Upper front cover corner has an approx. 1″ bend, extends through entire volume.   Library markings on reverse of title page.  Edge and corner wear  I think there may have been some water (?) “damage” to the lower front and rear covers, but it doesn’t appear to have damaged the covers or the text in any significant way.  The lower edge just looks “damaged”.  (See photo) Maybe it’s just dirt and folds.

Notes: Pamphlet.  Smithsonian Publication 3402.  Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections Volume 95, Number 19.   Abbot was the fifth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and an astrophysicist.  Abbot uses this volume to show the periodicity of solar radiation in the rings of trees, basing his observations on 23 and 46 year solar periodicities.  “Moreover, the 23-year cycle is to be found in varves of glacial age, in widths of tree rings in California and the West, in the levels of lakes and rivers, in the weather of the United States, and in other phenomena.”  (Page 1)  Abbot also invented the solar oven.  Ahead of his time much?
