Notes:  Beautiful color photography by Rommes, archaeological essay on Cedar Mesa and its long-ago inhabitants by Lipe.  “There is mounting evidence that a dynamic and mobile community existed at Cedar Mesa–people with clear ties to the centers of Chaco, Mesa Verde, Kayenta, and beyond…by the middle of the 1200s, the cliff dwellers of Cedar Mesa were literally and figuratively ‘living on the edge.’  Struggling with drought, limited food, population pressures, and the resulting violence, these farmers built homes on precarious sites in the canyon–places away from their fields–where they might better defend themselves from attack.  Eventually, even these resourceful people had enough.  They and their mesa-top neighbors abandoned Cedar Mesa en mass, and never returned.” (Page 3)
