Notes: This is Part II of Birkedal’s dissertation, and starts at Chapter 9.  According to Dr. Birkedal, Part I covers statistical data, and “is twice as thick.”  “…it was not a tightly-knit localized lineage, but a ‘settled-down’ version of the more loosely organized primary subsistence band that actually served as the basic residence unit of Basketmaker III inhabitants of the Mesa Verde proper.  This group typically occupied a small, irregularly dispersed settlement composed of individual pithouses.  The latter dwelling units housed single nuclear family households.  these households form the principle components of ‘building blocks’ of the larger residential groups.  It is believed that the primary bands of the Mesa Verde Basketmakers were roughly analagous (sic) to the minimum band groups of the traditional Western Apache, Navaho, and Pai.”  (From the Conclusions)  VERY RARE.  NO copies available for sale.  Dr. Birkedal is also the editor of The Search for the Lost Battlefield: Historical and Archeological Investigations at the Chalmette Battlefield, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve (National Park Service, 2009), a volume on the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812.
