Notes: One section of a proposed new power line, beginning at the San Juan Generating Station in northern New Mexico, down to Clifton, Arizona, then through some pretty rugged southeastern Arizona geography to Vail, Arizona, just south of Tucson. Much of the area had been previously surveyed. “Most of the survey area was abandoned by A.D. 1400. Spanish explorers did report Sobaipuri Indians living along the Rio San Pedro, but these Indians did not survive in the area beyond A.D. 1750…many prehistoric and several historic sites are located in close proximity to the transect line. Eight sites suggestive of Cochise occupation and forty-four sites indicating late agricultural manifestations are know to exist in the near vicinity of the transmission line right-of-way. Six petroglyph stations representative of local prehistoric rock art have been reported as well.” (Page 23) Some of the survey area is so rugged the survey had to be conducted by helicopter.
